Sustainability in the Brazilian Footwear industry is taking big steps into maturity. A growing number of businesses seek to build institutional strategies applied to their production processes, in order to cover all dimensions: economic viability, social engagement and environmental awareness. A fundamental agent for the transformation of this reality is the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (Abicalçados). The project manager of the entity, Cristian Schlindwein, points to the holding of workshops with experts, the dissemination of special content and, above all, the adherence of companies to the Origem Sustentável program as important guides for sustainability management. Origem Sustentável is a certification for Brazilian establishments in the footwear production chain that incorporate sustainability into their production processes.

PURPOSE MOBILIZES BIBI TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY SINCE THE 1990s

Among the companies committed to this agenda is Calçados Bibi (Parobé / RS). Since the 1990s, the manufacturer of children's shoes has positioned itself as a sustainable company. Bibi's Supply and Sustainability manager, Ismael Fischer, explains that the strong purpose of promoting a happy and natural growth to children directed the company to establish actions that mobilized the entire production chain. With that in mind, Bibi addressed the so-called “Citizen Campaigns“ in the early 1990s, highlighting in its packaging themes such as ”Endangered Animals“, "Water, Flora and Fauna“, ”Missing Children“, ”Oral Health“, ”Sports Practice", etc.

100% “Made in Brazil " production, with manpower generation and local suppliers were also relevant milestones in the company throughout its 72 years. For this, suppliers had to develop components free of restricted substances. And this initiative was noticed by customers from different parts of the world. Consequently, Bibi is now present in more than 70 countries, accounts for an annual production of 3 million pairs and makes R$ 150 million per year.

PRODUCTION ON DEMAND AT VINCI SHOES

Created in 2013 by three young entrepreneurs, Vinci Shoes (Estância Velha/RS) was born online and with on demand production, focusing on women who love flat shoes. The business model designed by the partners aims at the logic of fast production without stock accumulation. “Because of that, we have been able to considerably reduce waste and environmental impact, and also manage to have all sizes and colors always available,” explains the co-founder and director of Da Vinci stores and relationships, Rodrigo Morsch. Sneakers, loafers, mules, oxfords, flatforms and boots are very popular with an audience which is used to making online purchases. An international e-commerce operation is set to be launched by the end of 2021, with distribution from Brazil and delivery time of one week.

UNIQUE MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT AT SAVELLI

The commitment of Savelli Calçados (Franca/SP) with the pillars of sustainability was recognized by Abicalçados in 2019, when the company received the Direções Award in the medium/large size category. The award strengthens the image of the footwear sector, stimulates the competitiveness and development of Brazilian industries. Among the projects that make this manufacturer of men's leather shoes unique in their market is the one that provides its employees with courses for personal development, leadership training, English language, and the sharing of knowledge among the employees themselves.

Also in the last three years, the implementation of the 5s enterprise quality management program has made the factory environment even more pleasant. The result of the engagement, according to Savelli's marketing manager, Priscila Amaral, reflects in the loyalty of partners and customers around the world. Today, 70% of everything that comes out of the manufacturer's tracks is destined for the international market. "Until we have a product in hand with process traceability and with nature-friendly materials, we are dedicated to making internal policies and practices happen,” explains Priscila.

For Savelli's export manager, Bruna Pini, sustainability is a decisive aspect during negotiations with international clients. “It shows how professional we are and how the company sees itself in the future. If we don't take care of the three pillars of sustainability, we will vanish from the market. We seek tocontribute to a better world, which goes far beyond financial profit. It's a mission. We are passionate about making shoes and the customer can see that in all processes”, details Bruna.
